EMANCIPATION GARDEN CELEBRATION
ALD Agenda 2016

Emancipation Garden was filled with the spirit of Africa on Saturday, May 21, 2016, as the Pan African Support Group (PASG) held the annual African Liberation Day Program. Listen to the #HabariGaniVI radio program on www.wuvi.am (1090 AM/97.3 FM) to hear from the members of the PASG themselves.

The day started with the Solidarity Walk. Wearing all white, PASG memebers and event attendees walked from Market Square to Emancipation Garden. At the garden the event officially began with a Bell Toll, Drum Call, Libation and the Ancestral Roll Call followed by the Welcome shared by Felicia Blake of the Pan African Support Group (PASG).

The Wachanga drummers set the tone as well, for the next in a series of Cultural Presentations including the Ulla Muller Youth Bamboula Dancers, Wachanga Drummers & Dancers, and Nyabhinghi House who shared Ises (prayers and chants). Remarks were shared by Margaret Price, of the PASG and Harriet Mercer of Parents Matter.

In between the remarks, Musical Selections, Closing Acknowledgements, I spoke on the need for an Action Item being specifically, the Community Organizing CONTACT LISTS form that now is on my contact me page. Attendees texted to a number specifically created to organize contacts and/or wrote their information on one of two legal pads that were being passed around throughout the event. They were able to select which information they wanted to be notified of, thus eliminating the potential for spamming. The purpose of this list is to allow us to send out info faster and more efficiently when there are upcoming events and activities instead of depending on local media sources or word of mouth.

From 2pm – 4pm, the On Air University Radio Show took place on WSTA, hosted by PASG members and the day ended with the HabariGaniVI radio show hosted by myself on WUVI AM 1090/97.3 FM.

At all occasions, everyone was invited to attend the ceremony at the Legislature on Monday, May 23, 2016 between 10am – 12noon in the Earle B. Ottley Legislative chambers organized by the office of Senator Myron Jackson.

ALD was founded in 1958 when Kwame Nkrumah convened the First Conference of Independent States held in Accra, Ghana and attended by eight independent African states. The 15th of April was declared “Africa Freedom Day,” to mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolize the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.
