Annual Fortsberg 1733 Revolution Tour

Share about Fortsberg1733, today when we honor those who fought before us, for us in the 1st successful African revolution in the Western Hemisphere. For a significant moment in time, some months before the adversaries called for backup, St. John, VI was taken over by an enslaved people… and the rest is history. Join the tour on St. John today and every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving with our beloved Professor Gene Emanuel – Memorial (RIP), Dr. Gilbert A. Sprauve, Sele Adeyemi, Kuumba Ola-Niyi, Stephen J. Isaac, Anna Wallace Francis, Alcedo Justin Francis, Felicia V. Blake, Clarence “Lumumba” Leonard, and so many others keeping the torch burning.

Info from Judi Shimel: 1733 History Tour – Now in it’s 34th Year. Being held the day after Thanksgiving. The public, students and visitors are invited.

This tour offers a look at the historical sites that are part of the Nov. 23, 1733 Fortsberg uprising where enslaved African people overcame a Danish garrison. The staging of this event has inspired other historic walking tours on St. Thomas.

It is much better than reading history from a book. Hear what historians and scholars have to say about Fortsberg and the people who made it happen.

The group boards a ferry to St. John at 9 a.m. Friday morning from the Urman Fredericks Marine Terminal at Red Hook. They are expected to board safari buses on St. John that will lead them around the island for presentations and a few cultural treats.
Organizers recommend those joining the tour dress comfortably, wear durable shoes, pack water and a light lunch.

The 34th annual educational tour and commemorative pilgrimage to the sites of the 1733 Enslaved African Revolution on St. John will be held on the island of St. John Friday, November 23. The tour will include stops at Estate Adrian, Catherineberg, Susannaberg, Fortsberg and Annaberg.
