“I’m not saying that everybody gon have a way, I’m saying that everybody gon have a say.”

She feels that inclusion and cooperation are important to creating new steps forward and building trust, which she thinks will ensure that people feel good about where their children are going everyday.

Emmanuella’s general problem solving approach is to analyze and understand the culture, create space for voices to be heard equally, develop a plan and then collaboratively spearhead the plan. With the key word being together, she envisions a changed process that removes the focus of who’s to blame and instead replaces it with informed decision making and trust building.

Similar to a 360 middle manager performance review, her platform’s proposals include things like that parents and students would be able to evaluate teachers at the end of a school year. She feels strongly that insight from the students and parents is needed so that the board can develop an more directly informed plan to then be executed by the Department of Education. This way, everyone involved and affected can transparently and cooperatively sit at the table solving problems and creating solutions together.

“I live like the palm tree dem, swinging back and forth while my roots are planted so deep in my VI soil that I’m confident I can be able to work with many personalities across the board to make things happen.”

Emmanuella says she bends, but doesn’t break. Having grown up, been raised and educated on St. Croix, Virgin Islands, she respects that others also have the ability to bend and says that obtaining a Board of Education member seat wouldn’t be about her breaking down the tree next to her either. For her, it would be about working together with others on whichever way they collectively decide to bend for the betterment of the children.
