As women, we take on the world– careers, community, children, the health and happiness of our loved ones, and more. Jahweh is one of those women and she needs our support right now. Recently, Jahweh was admitted to the hospital in her home of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands for severe headaches. Upon being admitted, she learned that she had high blood pressure and was found to be in the beginning stage of kidney failure. Jahweh’s current health issues are also complicated by the fact that she has suffered from lupus for a number of years.
While the medical team at The Roy Lester Schneider Health Center is doing their best to address Jahweh’s critical health issues, the entire hospital system has struggled to provide adequate healthcare following hurricanes Maria and Irma, both category 5 hurricanes that wreaked havoc on Jahweh’s home island of St. Thomas last September.
Jahweh David is a self-taught mixed media artist. She has always had a passion for creating vivid images throughout her life. As a poet, she was one of the earliest members of The Rock Collective, which also provided a platform for local artists to share their gifts with others and build a sense of community through art. She is also a co-founder of the Dollar fo’ Dollar Cultural and Historical Tour helping to teach about the first successful (coal workers) strike of Charlotte Amalie and the Bamboula. Throughout the year, she also volunteers throughout St. Thomas with organizations including the Family Resource Center, the Art Exchange, and We Grow Food, Inc.
Following the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria, Jahweh opened her home to those impacted by the hurricane preparing free meals for anyone in need. As she volunteers and even struggles with health illnesses, Jahweh’s sweet smile and infectious laugh never leaver seems to leave her face or voice and the warmth of her spirit never wanes.
As a group of Jahweh’s sister friends, we are raising funds to help her access the medical care she needs to both heal and rest.
