Born in Dominica, and having grown up on St. Thomas,  Professor Max Hilaire, distinguished diplomatic lecturer, will be speaking at the University of the Virgin Islands on January 20, 2016. This lecture is one of the Open Doors Lecture Series, presented by the College of the Liberal Arts and Social Sciences through its Scholarly and Creative Committee. Read more details here from my Facebook note.

Come and learn from Dr. Hilaire about, “the status of the Virgin Islands, or lack thereof, in not having an international presence in the diplomatic arena, the reasons for it and the remaining territories that are occupied by European powers. In terms of the whole issue of the International Decade for People of African Descent – What does it mean when the UN makes a pronouncement on any particular issue. It generates a degree of consciousness and awareness amongst the international public in terms of focusing attention of the plights of these particular sub groups.”

Dr. Hilaire goes on to say that, “So much of what is coming out from Africa in the black world is so negative. There’s a lot of positive things happening and I hope the UN attention given to people of African Descent will reassure particularly young people of the contributions that great whether Africans in the diaspora, on the continent, have made to human civilization. I think that ought to be emphasized particularly in the Virgin Islands I think how it can be manifested in the school curriculum of course and more public discussion of people’s history and why people of African descent ought to be proud of their heritage because we’re not going anywhere whether we’re in the Caribbean, the United States or on the continent. So the more we educate our young people about the positive contributions that people of African Descent have made in all sectors of human activities on the planet, I think the more positive attitude students will have towards learning, towards our history and towards their own self-identity as a people.”
