DOLLAR FO’ DOLLAR REMEMBERS THE COAL WORKERS STRIKE WITH HARBOR TOUR

The Dollar fo’ Dollar Culture & History Committee Inc. invites the public to the 13th annual “Dollar fo’ Dollar Culture & History Tour: A Remembrance of the 1892 Coal Workers Strike of St. Thomas” in honor of the Coal Workers of the Virgin Islands from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 16th, 2018, with a free, interactive harbor tour in celebration of the hundreds of 19th and 20th century coal laborers and Queen Coziah, who successfully protested in Charlotte Amalie for better pay.

This year marks the 126th anniversary of the Coal Workers Strike on St. Thomas, which took place on Sept. 12, 1892. The tour will be conducted from the perspective of the water while onboard the Kon Tiki glass bottom party raft. Participants will gather at 11 a.m. at the end of the West Indian Company (WICO) dock, behind Port of Sale Mall at the eastern entrance to Yacht Haven Grande, behind establishments such as Wendy’s, Yacht Haven Family Practice, and Mind, Body, Health. Tour leaves promptly at 12 p.m.

Culture bearers include tour guides Nadine Marchena Kean, Ruby Simmonds Essannason, guest guide Vincent Palancia, the MACISLYN Bamboula Dance Company, the Ulla Muller Bamboula Dancers and Drummers, and song leader Glenn Kwabena Davis.

Significant sites include the St. Thomas harbor, the Soldier’s Barracks, the Old Police Office, Government Hill, the Commercial District, and Hassel Island. All are invited to wear comfortable shoes and white for cultural clothing for the free interactive tour, which includes bamboula dancing and drumming, re-enactments and a mini photo display.

Major funding for this program is provided by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Other partners include the Office of Senator Myron D. Jackson, DaraMonifah.com, Love Livin, Sankofa Saturdays and Meder Mogzit Family Farm.
